Staff Pet Parade

Readers aren’t the only ones who love to show off their pets! Meet the companions who distract Wake Living staff from deadlines by begging for our attention.

Nell and Jazz

We purchased these two miniature donkeys for our daughter when she was 8. They are great pets and guard animals, known for chasing away coyotes and predators from the chickens and ducks. They love snacks, especially potato chips.

Lucy

Lucy is a rescue who came into our lives eight years ago after being dropped at my parents’ farm in Caswell County, along with her twin sister, Ethel. While Ethel found a home with a neighbor, Lucy joined our family and quickly became the queen of squirrel chasing in the backyard!

Maximus and Ivy (left), Oreo and Lu (right)

Maximus and Ivy

10-year-old Maximus (right) likes to snooze, snack, and sun himself in the backyard. Ivy, 10 months, likes to disrupt those activities any chance she gets.

Oreo and Lu

These are my two guinea pigs: Oreo (left) and Lu. Oreo is my big princess and the perfect lap companion. She will purr when you pet her and give you kisses on your chin. Lu is my rambunctious, chatty boy. He bounces around all day, sometimes to Oreo’s annoyance. He is also very sweet and caring with her, cleaning her face and snuggling up with her when she’s feeling unwell. They are the perfect duo!

Muad’Dib

Mu has a sensor for when we’re on a magazine deadline. He responds by needing cuddles RIGHT NOW, often on top of my keyboard. We refer to him as our criminal because he’s always doing something he knows he shouldn’t.

Hank (left), Nigel (right)

Hank

Hank is our 6-year-old American Quarter Horse who never says no to a tasty apple or carrot. He’s a friendly soul who loves spending his time with his pasture buddy, Waylon, and enjoying long days under the sun.

Nigel

Nigel, a lovable havanese, has been a cherished member of our family since 2009. He enjoys exploring the backyard and making sure nothing goes unnoticed, barking at anything that moves! His favorite treat is popcorn, and when he’s not on alert, he’s the perfect lap dog, always ready for a snuggle.

Beauregard

We call him BoBo. We’ve had him for 16 years and counting!

Courage

I wake up every morning with Courage wrapped around my head on my pillow. He proceeds to cuddle on my chest and purr for 20 minutes, then steals my warm spot after I get out of bed.

Frank and Spud

Two of my snooziest kitties, Frank and Spud love spending their days in a cozy chair in my sunroom.

Mushu and Lucky

We found Lucky, the cream-colored one, after he was hit by a car in Mexico and brought him to his forever home. Mushu, adopted from PeaLabRescue, was very shy at first, but he’s gradually opening his heart to us. They absolutely love swimming and going on long bike rides.

Pepper

If you know boxers, you know they are the class clowns of dog breeds, and 2-year-old Pepper is no exception. This summer she kayaked the New River in Jefferson, NC, rode a SUP at Falls Lake, and protested many walks around her neighborhood in Raleigh. Pepper’s family threatens to give her away on a daily basis (because of her spicy attitude), but is always won over by her sweet face and lap-dog tendencies.

Minerva, Mrs. Buttersworth, Cleo, Ramona, and Thelma

My braver chickens decided to explore the snow last winter while their sisters (Bob, Pebble, Etta, and Xena) held down the fort in the coop.

Fabio and TC

Can you tell why we call him Fabio? Our gorgeous long-haired boy loves cuddling (and obscuring) his big brother, TC.
