Thousands turned out for Raleigh’s annual Kirby Derby on August 23 at Dorothea Dix Park, where zany homemade soapbox cars, costumes, live music, food, and beer made for a day of creative chaos. Founded in 2002 by the Pullen Park Terrace neighborhood and relocated to Harvey Hill in 2017, the event opens with a community parade and a kids-only pinewood-style race before gravity-propelled soapbox cars take the hill, with trophies for fastest time, most creative design, and people’s choice.
