Imagine getting up in the morning and walking 20 miles.
Now consider doing that for 120 days in a row, traveling 2,300 miles on foot — often barefoot.
A group of venerable Buddhist monks is doing just that in an effort to spread peace, kindness, and compassion across the country and the world.
The Walk for Peace departed the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 26 and is expected to reach the final destination of Washington, DC, in mid-February. Their canine companion Aloka is walking with them every step of the way.
Though wintry weather is forecast for our region, the pilgrimage is still set to pass through Raleigh this Saturday, January 24. Social media posts assure that the monks have appropriate gear and support to handle the weather, noting that they will seek indoor shelter if necessary for their well-being.
Visitors may join the venerable monks during their lunch stop from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and evening rest from 6-9 p.m. Location details are released on a daily live map and Facebook page the day prior.
“After walking many miles through wind, rain, and cold, the monks’ feet are often weary,” says a recent post on the Walk for Peace Facebook page that encourages spectators to create paths of flower petals on the approach to each day’s rest area.
“To walk upon a path of soft petals is a deeply meaningful experience — it feels as if your love and peace are rising up to support every step they take. It beautifully symbolizes that wherever the message of peace travels, flowers of harmony and tranquility bloom in its wake.”
Tax-deductible donations to support the monks’ journey and mission are accepted through the online Zeffy platform or via Zelle to huongdaovip2018@yahoo.com.

“With deep gratitude, we thank you for walking beside us in spirit,” says the donation page. “Your support is invaluable and helps us nurture peace — one mindful step at a time.”
